Dit project onderzoekt manieren waarop de kunstenaarsstudio HK57A in Koekelberg zijn bronnen kan delen met een reeks kunstenaars.

Rosalie de Cock woonde en werkte van 1904 tot 1910 in de Herkoliersstraat 57-57A, Koekelberg, Brussel, waar ze gerookt en gezouten vlees produceerde. We lazen voor het eerst over haar in het boek met de titel  - Koekelberg. Au fil du temps...Au coeur des rues..., Didier Sutter, 2012. Bij de renovatie van het ‘huisje’, het oudste deel van HK57A, ontdekten we dat de ophangpunten van het vlees regelmatig op de houten balken lagen en dat er een hoefijzer overblijft uit de tijd dat vier paarden de bezorgkarren trokken. We spreken vaak over de geest van Rosalie als iemand die onze onderneming over het hoofd ziet en ons begeleidt bij het nemen van goede beslissingen over reparatie en gebruik.

In deze eerste iteratie zal een programma van vijf producties plaatsvinden - één elke maand van februari tot mei 2021.

Elke kunstenaar 'toont' werk in relatie tot de ruimtelijke poëzie van HK57A. Op deze manier bouwen we wat kennis op over zijn creatieve vermogen. Elke productie bevat een consistente reeks resultaten: praktisch studio-gebaseerd, direct online, interview en documentatie.
Voor het publiek zal het ervaren van het werk en de toegang worden opgemaakt in overeenstemming met de Covid-voorschriften, hetzij rechtstreeks in de studio, hetzij via online en postproductie.

Lot Lemm en Alain Ayers kochten het pand aan de Rue Herkoliers 57A in 2019 en hebben een groot deel van 2020 besteed aan het renoveren en opzetten van de plaats als werkstudio's voor hen beiden. Al vroeg ontstond het idee om af en toe kunstwerken samen te stellen die specifiek de aard van de plek zelf als creatieve context aanspreken.

Direct na zijn verhuizing naar HK57A begon Ayers te werken aan het stuk - The Distance Between Here And Now - onderdeel van de Amberes-tentoonstelling in MHKA Antwerpen, terwijl Lemm werkte aan de kostuums voor een theaterstuk in Graz. Professioneel werk en renovatie zijn hand in hand gegaan tijdens het pandemiejaar 2020. Het was een non-stop, ietwat gekke periode van ontwikkeling met alle sociale en persoonlijke problemen die iedereen hebben getroffen.

Als eigenaren van HK57A, die dagelijks in de studio's werken en levenslange carrières hebben in de kunst en het kunstonderwijs, zien zij artistiek onderzoek als een sleutelcomponent voor duurzaamheid van plaats en praktijk. Daartoe voegen degenen die worden uitgenodigd om hier aan tijdelijke projecten te werken, een bijdrage aan dit onderzoeksprogramma. Het wordt ook een kleine maar directe manier om samen met anderen nieuwe ideeën mogelijk te maken en om creatief cultureel werk voort te zetten.

Gelegen in een kleine eenrichtingsstraat grenzend aan drie scholen, hangen de contexten van leren, spelen en doen in de lucht.

This curated project begins to explore ways that the artists studio HK57A in Koekelberg can share its resource with a range of creative practitioners. 

​

Rosalie de Cock lived and worked at Rue Herkoliers 57-57A, Koekelberg, Brussels from 1904 to 1910 where she produced smoked and salted meats. We first read about her in the book titled - Koekelberg. Au fil du temps...Au coeur des rues..., Didier Sutter, 2012.  In the renovations of the ‘little house’, the oldest part of HK57A we discovered the hanging points of the meats regularly spaced out on the wooden beams and a horse shoe remains from the days when four horses pulled the delivery carts. We often speak about the spirit of Rosalie as someone who oversees our enterprise and guides us to make good decisions about repairs and use.

In this first iteration a programme of five productions will occur - one each month from February to May 2021. 

​

Each artist 'shows' work in relation to the spatial poetics of HK57A. In this way we will build some knowledge about its creative capacity. Each production will contain a consistent set of outcomes: practical studio based, direct online, interview and documentation.  

For the audience, experiencing the work and access will be formatted in step with the Covid regulations, whether direct into the studio or via online and post production.

Lot Lemm and Alain Ayers purchased the property at 57A Rue Herkoliers in 2019 and have spent much of 2020 renovating and establishing the place as working studios for them both. Early on they formed the idea of occasionally curating artworks that specifically address the nature of the place itself as a creative context. 

Directly after moving to HK57A  Ayers began to work on the piece -  The Distance Between Here And Now - part of the Amberes exhibition at MHKA Antwerp while Lemm was working on the costumes for a theatre piece in Graz. Professional work and renovation has gone hand in hand during the pandemic year of 2020. It has been a non stop, slightly crazy period of development with all the social and personal issues that have affected everybody.   
As the proprietors of HK57A, who work in the studios daily and with lifelong careers in the arts and art education, they view artistic research as a key component towards sustainability of place and practice. To this end those invited to work on temporary projects here add to this programme of research. It also becomes one small but direct way that they can enable new ideas with others and for creative cultural work to continue. 
Situated in a small one way street adjacent to three schools, the contexts of learning, playing and doing hang in the air.
